No pet parent likes to see their dog or cat suffering from the constant itch of flea bites. Or, even worse, the severe irritation and reaction from the flea saliva that affects dogs and cats who are allergic to fleas. These itchy pests aren’t just annoying, they can cause severe health issues for you and your pets.

Advantage Products for Flea Control in Cats and Dogs

Advantage offers a variety of flea and parasite treatments that make it convenient and easy to keep these pesky critters off your pet.

Protect Your Pets from Fleas and Parasites

Advantage II

This is an easy-to-apply, supremely convenient monthly topical treatment that kills adult fleas on contact. The fleas don’t have to bite your dog or cat to die, unlike oral treatments that count on the flea biting your pet to work. It also stops the flea’s life cycle by killing the eggs and larva along with the adult fleas. Apply on the back of the pet’s neck. For larger dogs, apply along the spine in three separate areas.

Advantage Multi

Advantage Multi protects cats and dogs from a variety of parasites. It kills fleas for 30 days and protects your pets from heartworms and intestinal worms, all in one convenient monthly application. Apply on the back of the pet’s neck. For larger dogs, apply along the spine in three separate areas.

In dogs: Kills fleas and helps prevent roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, sarcoptic mange, and heartworm disease and treats heartworm microfilaria.

In cats: Kills fleas, ear mites and helps prevent heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms.

Advantage Flea and Tick Treatments for Pets

Take the battle to fleas and ticks where they live Advantage parasite-killing shampoos suitable for puppies over 12 weeks old and adult dogs. The spray treatment is a less stressful, highly effective way to rid your dog of ticks, fleas, and lice while also guarding against flea-bite dermatitis.

Keep Fleas Out of Your Home

Advantage Household Treatments

Once you’ve treated your pet, to ensure no reinfestation occurs, you need to treat your home. Get into hard-to-reach and problem areas with Advantage sprays for upholstery, carpet, and baseboards.

It’s no use ridding your pet of fleas and other parasites if the infestation exists throughout your home. Target problem and hard-to-reach areas with Advantage sprays for carpets, upholstery, and crevices. In addition to zapping fleas and ticks, these products may reduce the population of a variety of other pests, such as cockroaches, bed bugs, mites, lice, beetles, gnats, and flies.

Keep Fleas Out of Your Yard

Advantage Yard and Premise Spray

And last but not least, for total flea protection, don’t forget to treat your yard, patio, deck, and the surrounding area to keep your pet from bringing in a hitchhiker in the form of a flea or tick.

Risk Factors and Drug Interactions

Cats process medications differently than dogs do, so never use dog products on your cat. Products made for cats have different formulations.

When Advantage topicals are applied, a little bit of the solution is absorbed by the body. The rest remains in the lipid layer of the hair and skin.

The products are safe to use in pregnant animals and are non-toxic if eaten, although it has an unpleasant flavor and may cause frothing at the mouth, especially in cats. For this reason, the product should be applied at the base of their skull so that they cannot lick it off.

Skin reactions rarely occur and are usually a result of a pet’s allergy to the product. It can cause irritation if it gets into the eyes.

Side effects

As with any medical treatment, there may be a small portion of animals with individual sensitivities. Always monitor your pet immediately after application and for a few days after. If there are signs of any adverse reaction or your pet’s health worsens, consult a vet immediately.

  • Hair loss and skin irritation at the application site
  • Drooling
  • Shaking
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite

Rare Side Effects

Serious side effects are very rare. They occur in animals with allergies to the product, that have accidentally ingested the product, or when a mistake was made using it. The signs that a pet is having a severe reaction to the product should be quickly noticeable. If you notice any of the symptoms below, immediate veterinary attention is needed:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Pupil dilation, eye irritation, or increased tear production
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Uncoordinated movement or stumbling
